This group boat project draws from indigenous fabrication traditions, reinterpreting them through a contemporary design lens. EXO prioritized the use of naturally sourced materials such as jute, poplar wood, and beeswax. Contemporary sealants were incorporated later in the fabrication process to improve water tightness. The design was distilled into two primary components: an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton. The endoskeleton consisted of a water-sealed burlap skin, tensioned within a curvilinear exoskeleton formed from steamed poplar wood. When afloat, EXO progressed at a controlled, steady speed, competing against other student-built boats in a class regatta. Many observed that it offered a uniquely immersive experience, as the burlap skin amplified the sensation of the surrounding currents, heightening the feeling of direct contact with the aquatic environment.
